Born with a visual impairment, my quest to “fit in” has been challenged by the fact that I do not. Being overly self-aware, perhaps hyper-sensitive, I’ve come to realize that my vision largely formed my identity, to yield a particular self-image. But for a long time I did not want to address of the ramifications of this socially or personally. Instead I developed ways to cope; for example, I’ve tried to adapt, to fit in, by wearing dress shirts. I would not stand out. I felt more empowered, especially since others around me wore tee-shirts. Similarly, I have found locations of sanctuary; I developed emotional ties to each location I have lived and depicted in these photographs. Each scene has been staged to represent an image in my memory of place and circumstance.
