Design Student Creates Mural for the Orlando Shelter

March 14, 2012 by Victor Davila

Graphic Design Junior Elizabeth Williamson designed and created a mural for an Orlando women and children's shelter run by the Salvation Army. She received the commission after winning the mural design contest sponsored by Papa John's Pizza.

"I completed my design using symbols of hope such as the blue iris, snowdrops, and butterflies. I wanted to create an artwork that would brighten up the area and make the women and children smile," she said.

Papa John's brought in about 1,000 volunteers on Monday, March 5, 2012, to complete renovations to the women and children's shelter, as well as a men's shelter nearby. Williamson directed 30 of the volunteers in the painting of the flat colors for the mural. She then went in and added details and value to the entire mural. Williamson spent most of her Spring Break on the project and is happy with the results stating, "I am proud to say that this was my first mural and most ambitious artwork to date."
